Student Innovation Cup is going to be an annual campus-wide pitching and demo competition by students from different schools organized by TechTalks.ph. We saw that college thesis requirements and capstone projects take lots of time and effort to complete. So, why not show it to the public for validation of the ideas and recognition of the hardworking teams who built it. We got an overwhelming response of more than 30 entries from different universities and colleges in Cebu, and a few from Mindanao in our very first edition. The product ideas ranged from Cebu Lechon Business to tattoo arts. There was definitely no shortage of brilliant ideas on the event.

Brilliant ideas are, of course, best evaluated by brilliant minds. The Student Innovation Cup was graced by icons from different fields as judges: Gerald Yuvallos founder of Istorya.net (read our recent article of him here >>), Jay Aldeguer of Island Souvenirs empire, and Stephanie Caragos of Syntactics. And, here are the winners of the 1st Student Innovation Cup 2015, held at University of Cebu Banilad Campus.

THE WINNERS

1ST PLACE. Communication Aid for DeafBlind from students of Department of Computer Engineering - University of San Carlos. The team members are: Jurgen Lasa - Team Leader, Jade Anthony A. Dela Peña - Circuit Design Head Marc B. Chan - Materials and Mechanical Systems Head Trixie I. Zapanta - PCB Fabrication Head Angelique B. Francia - Android Mobile Application Development Head Elevator Pitch:

"Our product is a hardware device that helps the deafblind in communicating with other people. Because deafblind people are unable to see and hear, the device supports Braille, a tactile form of alphabet, as its main communication form. The product supports Speech to Braille and Braille to Speech functionality where speech inputs from the microphone are converted into Braille and Braille inputs from the Braille keyboard are converted to speech and outputted through the speakers. The product may be paired with an android mobile phone via Bluetooth to allow the product to support SMS to Braille and Braille to SMS functionality. SMS messages are converted to Braille and Braille inputs from the Braille keyboard can be outputted as SMS messages. There are a total of four (4) functionalities that the product has, namely: Speech to Braille, Braille to Speech, SMS to Braille, and Braille to SMS."

2ND PLACE. Prepaid Water Supply System. from students of Department of Computer Engineering - University of San Carlos. The team members are: Kevin Suson - Hardware Engineer Cris Thadeo Cortes - Testing Head Junichi Miyahara - Data Analyst Stephen Cabalida - Network Engineer Elevator Pitch:

"The purpose of the project was to create a prepaid water supply system through supervisory control with data acquisition using wireless LAN technology and Radio Frequency. The project has three components namely the web application, which is responsible for the primary interaction of the customers and the system itself. The servers are composed of a Database server and a Base station. The Database server is responsible for receiving and fulfilling the requests of the Water control systems (water meters) through the Base station. The Base station is responsible for the management of the connection of the water control systems and the validation of the packets sent by the water control systems. Lastly, the water control systems which were implemented by integrating existing technology such as, a microcontroller, RF module, a water flow sensor which provides electrical pulses that we’ve related to calculate for the volume flow rate and our own electric valve that slowly stops the water flow if the remaining balance (volume of water in liters) in the water control system approaches to zero."

3RD PLACE. Cashless Bus Fare Payment System from students of Department of Computer Engineering - University of San Carlos. The team members are: Orville Jhon Pueblo - Development Lead Jose Ronnie Ranile - System Analyst Harrald Rivera - Testing Lead Elevator Pitch:

"It's a fare payment system where passengers can place their RFID cards and pay for the fare. The project consists of 3 modules which are the Fare Payment System, Loading Station System and Website application. The passengers can also reload their RFID cards through the loading station and can also read their remaining balance. The website application is for the administrators personnel responsible for updating information including bus number, bus schedule, bus fare, etc."

Again, TechTalks.ph would like to thank the judges, supporters, and UC Banilad for the venue. Congratulations to the students and teachers who took time to be part of the very first edition. You are all winners for being an inspiration to us and for the future Student Innovation Cups.

Keep posted as we will share the other entries as they are all worth mentioning. For those interested to be part of this event, be a member of TechTalks.ph community to not miss any updates!
